Welcome to OPPAM, A COMMUNITY UPLIFTMENT PROJECT which is an inspiring and a transformative initiative dedicated to the development and socio-cultural enhancement of marginalised people in Trivandrum. Designed by the Department of Sociology at the University of Kerala, OPPAM aims to uplift the quality of life for the marginalised community through awareness programs, skill development programs and specialized training in handicrafts, particularly in creating decorative items made from bamboo and canes.

The OPPAM Tribal Project is a collaborative initiative supported by the Tribal Department, National Bamboo Mission, Government of India, Kerala State, and Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion. These partnerships have been crucial in providing the necessary support and resources to make this project a success
KEY MILESTONES
From Heritage to Prosperity
First tribal Start-Up in Kerala
The Department of Sociology at Kerala University has achieved a landmark by spearheading the inaugural of the first Adivasi start-up in Kerala. This pioneering endeavor is a collaborative initiative aimed at empowering the Manithooku Kani tribal community in Vithura Grama Panchayat of Thiruvananthapuram district.
Inauguration and Support
Inaugurated in February 2023, the project received auspicious commitment from Sri K. Radhakrishnan, Honorable Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes, Devaswom, and Parliamentary Affairs.
Phase One Success
The inaugural phase at Manithookki saw significant success, leading to the extension of the project to five additional tribal wards in Vithura Panchayat: Manali, Maruthamala, Peppara, Ponnanchundu, Kallar, and Manithookki.
Phase 2 and Phase 3 Expansion
With support from the Kerala Bamboo Mission and the National Institute of Design (NID), the project has expanded to include more comprehensive training programs led by talented trainers, further enhancing the skills of the marginalized community.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Discover the Essence of Wayanad with Oppam
- Economic Impact : The training programs, which include a daily stipend, have provided significant financial support to the participants. Strategic placement of stalls has helped the community acquire around two lakhs of revenue, drastically improving their standard of living.
- International Recognition: OPPAM's bamboo and reed handicrafts are now recognized internationally and are available on KU LIFE's e-commerce platform.
- Successful Exhibitions and Sales: Our products have been showcased at various prestigious events, including HEIGHTS-2023 Fest Department of Sociology, Kareelayam by the Government of Kerala, Gotra Kantharam by Vithura Grama Panchayath, and the Bamboo Fest in Kaloor. These exhibitions have not only highlighted the impressive craftsmanship of the Kani tribe but have also significantly improved their livelihoods, earning substantial revenue.
