Bamboo Projects, Bound by Unity
Project Area Phase I
The Project “Oppam” was inaugurated on 23 Feb 2023 by Hon. K.Radhakrishnan, Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes, Devaswasm, Parliamentary Affairs with the presence of Adv. G Stephen MLA, Adv. V S Babu Raj, President Vithura Grama Panchayat, Adv. K H Babujan, Member Syndicate, University of Kerala and Dr. Anil Kumar, Registrar, University of Kerala, Project Director and Head of the Department of Sociology Dr. Sandhya R .S. and Lovely J. S., Ward Member, Manithookki. There was active participation from Vithura Grama Panchayat Administration and community members.
The training period helped the community members to learn and practice new skills in producing various marketable products. Thanks to these new skills, they can now provide a stable income for themselves and their families. The training has held at Community Center in Manithooki Settlement. The raw materials are collected with the support of the Forest Department.
They were taught to make everyday items such as a hanger, table lamb, bamboo ladle, hair clip, pen, pen stand, puttu maker (bamboo), tong, mobile stand, mug, magazine holder, and pen holder.
The training program has concluded on 20 May 2023 followed by Certificate Distribution for the participants.
Project Area Phase II
The success of the first phase at Manithookki, the Department in collaboration with Vithura Grama Panchayat extended the project area to five other Tribal wards of Vithura Panchayat namely Manali, Maruthamala, Peppara, Ponnamchundu, Kallar and Manithookki and trained them to make products and ornaments made of Bamboo and Cane.
